Quarterback Tom Savage, the former prized recruit and Freshman All-America selection at Rutgers, has submitted the paperwork to transfer to the University of Arizona, the Arizona Daily Star reported Thursday.

Savage, who started 10 games as a freshman at Rutgers in 2009 after a celebrated high school career, will sit out the 2011 season and be eligible to play in 2012. With Nick Foles returning for his senior season at Arizona, Savage will be positioned to compete for the starting job once he's eligible. Foles transfered to Arizona from Michigan State.

"It gives us a game-experienced quarterback to compete in the near future," Arizona coach Mike Stoops told the Daily Star. "Getting him is similar to us getting Nick (Foles) as a transfer a few years back."

Savage played in 12 games as a freshman at Rutgers, throwing for 2,211 yards and 14 touchdowns in helping lead the Scarlet Knights to a 9-4 record and a bowl appearance. But injury and ineffectiveness resulted in his losing his starting job to Chas Dodd in 2010, and he announced his plans to transfer after the season.
