Pryor's OSU ring fetches $18,100

A piece of jewelry that helped bring unwanted NCAA scrutiny to the Ohio State football program has brought its most recent owner a windfall.

A ring that appeared to be quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s from the Buckeyes' 2008 Big Ten championship season sold on eBay for $18,100 Saturday.

The ring bearing Pryor's name and an accompanying picture noted the team’s 42-7 victory over Michigan on Nov. 28, 2008 for the conference title.

Ohio State's season came under scrutiny in the form of the NCAA investigation that brought sanctions related to the "tattoo-gate" scandal in which players traded memorabilia — including the auctioned ring — for payments. The NCAA penalties left Ohio State unable to play in a BCS bowl game last January despite a 12-0 season.

Pryor and four teammates were suspended for the first five games of Ohio State’s 2011 season and ordered to repay various sums of money. The quarterback left school after the scandal and is now with the NFL's Oakland Raiders.

The controversy eventually led to the resignation of longtime head coach Jim Tressel.
