Penn State vs. Michigan State Preview

Penn State enters this week’s tilt against Michigan State with a lot on the line, particularly in the race for the Big Ten East crown.
In a scenario that was practically unfathomable two months ago, Penn State has a chance to compete in the Big Ten Championship and earn a birth into a major bowl. However, before any of that can happen, the Nittany Lions need to take care of business against the Michigan State Spartans.
Although it’s a down year for the Spartans, who have only one Big Ten win, the Nittany Lions can’t overlook them.
Head coach James Franklin has done an excellent job of keeping his team focused on the upcoming game despite the added pressure and media attention.
The reality is that at kickoff the Nittany Lions will know if a chance at the Big Ten Championship is still possible. Regardless, a win over the Spartans will give the Nittany Lions a 10-win season. However, in order to do that, they will have to be on top of their game.
Despite putting up 39 points at Rutgers last week, the Nittany Lion offense had a lot of trouble getting started. They will look to avoid a slow start this week against a decent Michigan State defense. Quarterback Trace McSorley could have a tough day against the Big Ten’s No. 3 pass defense.
Michigan State has suddenly found a running game, led by LJ Scott. The Spartans have racked up over 200 rushing yards in each of the last two games. Fortunately, Penn State has improved on defense as a whole, particularly against the run. The Nittany Lions held Rutgers to just 87 total yards last week, including 39 on the ground.
Penn State will look to avenge an embarrassing 55-16 loss in East Lansing last year.
