Patterson: Boykin's making progress, but not 100 percent yet

TCU coach Gary Patterson said senior quarterback Trevone Boykin took it upon himself to get his ailing ankle taped up and see what he could do at the Horned Frogs' Sunday practice.

“He was hopping around a little bit yesterday,” Patterson told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He was the one that wanted to get taped up and go. I was not the guy that pushed him to do that. It was, ‘Yeah, it’s feeling better, let’s tape it up, let’s see what I can do today.’ It was fun to watch him back.”

Does that mean Boykin is ready to start the final regular-season game of his career Friday against the Baylor Bears?

“He’s not 100 percent yet,” Patterson said told reporters Monday on the Big 12 coaches conference call. “Every day, obviously far better than he was when we made the decision for him not to play. Hopefully he’ll just keep getting better every day. But he’s doing his best to try to get back."

With star receiver Josh Doctson out with a wrist injury, TCU could certainly use its senior signal-caller back against the Bears. The Horned Frogs' hopes for a second consecutive Big 12 title and first playoff berth are out the window after the season's second loss last week, but there's still last year's 61-58 loss at Baylor to avenge in what has become a bitter Big 12 rivalry.
