OSU notebook: The old ball game

You can take Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden out of baseball, but you can't take the baseball out of Weeden, a former second-round draft pick of the New York Yankees. Last Thursday, Weeden kept flipping channels between a college football game (Nebraska's rout of Kansas State) and baseball playoff games. He's pulling for the Yankees, of course.

Monday, Weeden trotted out a baseball analogy when asked about the luxury of having a kicker (Dan Bailey) who hasn't missed a field goal this season. Said Weeden, "It's like having Mariano Rivera as a closer." Long range: Bailey is riding a streak of 14 consecutive successful field goal attempts this season. He said he is not superstitious. "It's moreso that I just don't like to get out of the routine," he said. "I like to keep things in a certain order and do things a certain way." Bailey, who kicked two 52-yard field goals against Louisiana-Lafayette, said he has kicked 65-yarders in practice that "sneak over" the cross bar. The rest of the story: There's a reason OSU receiver Justin Blackmon excels at snaring jump balls. He's been doing it for a long time in a sport other than football. Blackmon said he handled jump-ball chores as a basketball player at Plainview High School even though he wasn't the team's point guard. "I had a little technique to get through it and jump against some of the big guys," he said. "I don't think I lost one in high school." Blackmon's multi-sport background also includes a hockey stint - mostly roller hockey, but also ice hockey.
