Nunez offers ray of hope for South Carolina
With the season potentially hanging in the balance, a true freshman quarterback stepped up and led the South Carolina Gamecocks to victory in impressive fashion.
Lorenzo Nunez went 12-of-22 for 184 yards and two touchdowns in the 31-14 victory this past weekend over UCF. He also rushed for an impressive 123 yards on 18 carries. In total, he accounted for over 300 yards of total offense.
"When you have a quarterback that can run, he runs about as much as a halfback," said head coach Steve Spurrier. "This is new for me, a quarterback that can run like he can. We're trying to maximize the talents of our players."
Whether it was on quarterback-designed runs, or scrambles when the play breaks down, Nunez added a considerable amount of juice to a team in desperate need of some. His ability to make plays with his feet makes South Carolina's offense much more dangerous and unpredictable. Teams will now have to account for Nunez's ability to run the football. As a result, this could open up things in the passing game.
"He played a little better than we all anticipated," said Spurrier. "We knew he could run, but gosh, he hit a bunch of passes. I think he threw the ball a lot better than maybe we anticipated."
Heading into a big game versus Missouri on the road, the Gamecocks will likely rely upon his heroics to lead them to its first conference victory of the season. If anything, Spurrier has faith in his young signal-caller.
"He's a gamer, I think he's a gamer. I think we learned that [versus UCF]."
