North Dakota State says former Tulane defensive coordinator Steve Stanard will be the new linebackers coach for the Bison.

Athletic department spokesman Jeff Schwartz confirmed the hire Friday. Coach Craig Bohl told The Forum newspaper (http://bit.ly/xAvtYA) that Stanard has a great understanding of the Tampa 2 defense, which is NDSU's base formation.

Stanard was part of a Tulane staff that was let go after the 2011 season. He also has been a part of staffs at Ohio, Colorado State, New Mexico State, Nebraska and Nebraska-Wesleyan.

The Bison (14-1) won the FCS championship last season, beating Sam Houston State in the title game.
