North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky continues incredible season

Mitch Trubisky has become a last second hero and efficient signal caller for the Tar Heels, however he’s going unnoticed.

The North Carolina Tar Heels football team is sitting at 4-1 on the season. A large part of the team’s early season success is due to junior quarterback Mitch Trubisky. He’s not just taking care of the ball, he’s airing out with deadly accuracy.

In fact, no one is more accurate than Trubisky. He leads the NCAA in completion percentage with 76.0 percent of his passes hitting their mark. What’s more impressive is that he’s thrown 175 passes and has yet to be intercepted this season. For those of you doing the math at home, that’s 35 pass attempts a game. He’s found the end zone 13 times and the defense’s hands zero.

However, all these stats pale in comparison to his clutch moments. In Week 4, the Tar Heels trailed the Pittsburgh Panthers 36-30. He led North Carolina’s offense right down the field completing 10-of-15 passes for 88 yards and the game-winning touchdown pass to Bug Howard. In total, he went 35-of-46 for 453 yards and five touchdowns.

For an encore, he took the Tar Heels on a second game-winning drive this weekend. Trubisky and the Tar Heels built a 21-0 advantage over the 12th ranked Florida State Seminoles. Over the next two and a half quarters the Seminoles went on a 35-13 run to take a 35-34 lead with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Trubisky was called upon once again to pull a win out of the jaws of defeat. On the first play, he completed a 23-yard pass to Mack Hollins to get North Carolina to midfield. Two plays later, he gave Hollins a chance to make a catch and it resulted in a defensive pass interference. The penalty moved the Tar Heels within range of a 54-yard field goal. Kicker Nick Weiler came through big time hitting the game-winning kick and dropping the highly ranked Seminoles at home.

These aren’t your brother’s Tar Heels

North Carolina football has definitely taken a step up. Obviously, UNC is a basketball school, but they are a solid football program. Head coach Larry Fedora’s wide open offensive approach has turned the Tar Heels into the fast break on grass. Trubisky is the perfect vessel for the offense to run through. Right now the team is averaging 40.4 points per game and is 15-4 over its last 19 games.

It’s time to leave the basketball jokes at the stadium entrance. This isn’t a Kansas or Kentucky, the Tar Heels deserve your respect.
