LaQuintin Caston ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, leading Nicholls State in a 42-0 demolition of Evangel in the season opener for both teams on Thursday night.
Caston rushed for 137 yards on 16 carries and was 5-for-13 for 39 yards with an interception through the air for the Colonels, who also routed the Crusaders 40-17 in the teams' only other meeting in 1979.
Nicholls State scored early and often to put it out of reach. Caston's 52-yard touchdown run and 13-yard scoring pass to Aldaro Russell bookended Tyrie Allen's 9-yard TD rush, putting the Colonels up 21-0 after the first quarter.
The Colonels scored once more in each quarter, including a 48-yard TD run to make it 28-0 at halftime.
Nicholls State outgained Evangel 422-147 on offense, including a 326-62 margin in rushing yards.
Andre Brimhall led Evangel with 76 yards passing and 14 rushing.
