Nebraska's David Santos says he's trying to forget about the fight this summer that left him injured and led to two of his fellow defensive players being kicked off the team.
The knot and scar on his forehead are constant reminders.
''Stuff happens, and it's unfortunate,'' Santos said Friday. ''As a team we've kind of moved past that. We're focused on football first of all. Stuff happens to regular people, and stuff happens to us. You've got to learn from it and move on, and that's what we've done. We've moved on to the next thing.''
Santos required a couple stitches after he was hit by a bottle during a skirmish at a house party in Lincoln in late June. Defensive end Ernest Suttles was ticketed on suspicion of misdemeanor assault and kicked off the team. Linebacker Thomas Brown also was dismissed.
Santos played in 13 games as a freshman last season and is projected to start at linebacker this fall. He said he isn't worried about team chemistry being negatively affected.
''No, it's not really a red flag,'' he said. ''I still see the same guys. They have respect for me. I don't feel ashamed.''
Senior defensive end Jason Ankrah said the players supported coach Bo Pelini's decision to kick Suttles and Brown off the team. Suttles was a highly regarded recruit who had a chance to be an immediate contributor as a freshman. Brown was expected to contend for playing time as a redshirt freshman.
''It was really just that night that something went down,'' Ankrah said. ''One of the players had previous incidents of starting things, and that night was the last straw for him, and unfortunately he brought along another person with him.
''It just went down the wrong way. We all know what we have to do. We know right from wrong. The fact that they did that, they chose to do that, that's wrong. We're still going to move on.''
Santos wouldn't say specifically what started the fight.
''Just a series of unfortunate events happened, silly events,'' he said. ''We've corrected it, and we've made it right, and we've moved on.''
The Cornhuskers open practice Monday.
