The NCAA football season is underway and there are a ton of marquee matchups between the ACC and SEC Conferences. Will the ACC post a shutout?

The SEC conference is thought to be the best college conference in the nation, and rightfully so with multiple national championships over the last decade.

However, the ACC conference is no longer a bottom dweller. The conferences have gone 9-9 against one anther over the past two seasons.

There are three ACC/SEC matchups on opening weekend with the ACC being favored to win in two of those games.

FSU is around a 4-5 point favorite over Ole Miss, and Clemson is a -8 point favorite against Auburn.

Georgia is a -3 favorite against UNC in the only game where a SEC team is favored to win.

The only true road game is Clemson going to Jordan-Hare Stadium. The other two games are “neutral” site games, but both games are in the home state of one of the teams.

Ole Miss has to go to Orlando, Florida, to play FSU. UNC has to go to the Georgia Dome to play Georgia.

The UNC/Georgia game is more of a “pick’em” game since Georgia is only favored by three points at a neutral field.

Can the ACC pitch a shutout?

I fully expect FSU and Clemson to win their games. I think Ole Miss is too young on the defensive side of the ball, and unless redshirt freshman Deondre Francois gets careless with the ball FSU should roll.

Clemson’s offense should roll against Auburn, but how much did they lose on defense? Auburn is breaking in a new QB as well.

The toss-up game is UNC/Georgia. UNC returns a potent offense with new QB Mitch Trubisky, and the defense will be in year number two with Gene Chizik.

Georgia won 10 games last season and have a new first time head coach in Kirby Smart.

I picked UNC to cover the three points oddsmakers are giving Georgia, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see UNC’s defense give up too many plays and lose a close one either.

The ACC should at least go 2-1 against the SEC on opening weekend.
