OXFORD, Miss. (AP) Mississippi defensive coordinator Dave Wommack will retire at the end of the season.

The school announced Wommack's retirement about an hour before Saturday's Egg Bowl against rival Mississippi State. Wommack, 60, has been the Rebels' defensive coordinator the past five seasons, which spans coach Hugh Freeze's entire tenure.

Ole Miss had one of the nation's best defenses in 2014, but the unit has slowly gone downhill over the past two seasons. The Rebels are giving up more than 32 points per game this season, which ranks 12th out of 14 Southeastern Conference teams.

Wommack has had a lengthy career as a defensive coordinator, including stops at Southern Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia Tech and Arkansas State before joining Ole Miss for the 2012 season.
