It’s been a pretty tough last few weeks for Michigan football, but with a chance to beat Florida State in a New Year’s Six Bowl, it can right the path.

After losing to Iowa and Ohio State in two of the final three games of the season, not earning a spot in the Big Ten championship, and then being left out of the College Football Playoff (while being jumped by Penn State in the rankings), Michigan football can right the path with a win over Florida State in the Capital One Orange Bowl.

There’s no doubt it’s been a rough stretch of the season, even after getting off to 9-0 start, but it’s not like Michigan stopped being a good team.

The Wolverines still finished the season with the country’s No. 2 defense, still finished with 274 yards worth of sacks, still finished with a +6 turnover margin.

Perhaps Michigan was just a couple plays away from beating Ohio State, going to the Big Ten title game, and then maybe going to the playoff, but the detriment of every loss along the way shouldn’t be the focus anymore. What would be truly tragic is if Michigan were to lose to Florida State, ending the season on a 1-3 skid.

A preliminary look at the Seminoles shows a balanced offense that finds a little more success on the ground than it does through the air. On defense, Florida State is again fairly balanced. This is a team that’s won six of its last seven games, and the loss was by three points to Clemson.

The Seminoles performed exceptionally well on defense during that stretch.

We’ll give more in-depth looks at Florida State in the days and weeks to come, but the consequences of a win or a loss remain the same no matter what.

If the Wolverines win a New Year’s Six Bowl, getting Win 11 on the season, it rights what has been a bumpy home stretch. If they lose, finishing on a 1-3 note, there won’t be a lot to look back on and smile at.
