Metz leads UTEP to 27-17 win over FCS-Incarnate Word

EL PASO, Texas (AP) Ryan Metz threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns as UTEP pulled away late to beat FCS-Incarnate Word 27-17 on Saturday night.

Metz, who was 20-of-28 passing, also ran for 46 yards to lead all UTEP (2-2) rushers. Hayden Plinke grabbed four passes for 80 yards and Jaquan White pulled in seven for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Jay Mattox, who nailed a career-best 50-yard field goal in the second quarter, made a 32-yarder with 10:01 remaining in the fourth to give the Miners a 20-17 lead. On the next series Metz hit White on a 36-yard scoring play for the final margin with 4:57 left.

The score was tied at 17-17 after three quarters.

Trent Brittain led the Cardinals (2-2), throwing for 295 yards and two touchdowns and running for another 63 yards. Jamari Gilbert grabbed four passes for 154 yards and two scores.
