LSU starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson and linebacker Josh Johns were suspended indefinitely Friday after turning themselves in to police on charges resulting from a bar fight.
The arrest warrants were issued Friday morning on felony charges of second-degree battery, and the players agreed to immediately turn themselves in to police headquarters.
Jefferson and Johns were released after each posting a $5,000 bond, the Baton Rouge Advocate reported.
The charges stem from a fight last Friday outside a bar in Baton Rouge, La. Second-degree battery carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
"Jordan and Josh have been suspended indefinitely," head coach Les Miles said in a statement released by the school.
"We will continue to cooperate with the authorities in an effort to find out exactly what took place during the incident. As sad as this incident is, it's important that we learn from this and that we take away a valuable lesson. This has weighed on all of us. It's time for us to come together as a team and focus on what we are here to do."
At least one witness had told police that Jefferson, 20, kicked 21-year-old Andrew Lowery in the face during the brawl, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported. A separate report quoted bar employees as saying Lowery threw the first punch, triggering the melee.
The arrest warrant accuses both players of kicking a man while he was lying on the ground, according to the Advocate.
The fight resulted in four men being hospitalized, including one who suffered serious injuries. The release from Baton Rouge police did not specify any charges against Lowery.
Investigators searched Jefferson's home Thursday, hauling away bags of evidence including about 50 pairs of shoes. Police reportedly examined blood samples to try to match a footprint on the shirt of one of the victims.
East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III told the paper he would likely bring the case before a grand jury, a process that could take weeks to complete.
Two other LSU players, freshman wide receiver Jarvis Landry and sophomore offensive tackle Chris Davenport, were said to be involved in the incident but have not been charged.
Johns, 21, is a sophomore outside linebacker and was not projected as a starter this season.
The fourth-ranked Tigers open their season Sept. 3 with a highly-anticipated matchup against No. 3 Oregon at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The suspension of Jefferson and Johns comes one day after starting wide receiver Russell Shepard was ruled ineligible for the season opener due to an NCAA violation. He could miss several more games while the NCAA looks into the matter.
The Tigers will now likely turn to fifth-year senior Jarrett Lee, who threw for 573 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in spot duty last season. He led a game-winning, 16-play drive after replacing Jefferson in a 16-14 win over Tennessee last October.
