Johnson leads Charlotte past Chowan in 47-7 rout

Matt Johnson threw for five touchdowns and no interceptions to lead Charlotte (2-0) to a 47-7 victory over Chowan on Saturday.

Johnson, a redshirt freshman, completed 23 of 30 passes for 256 yards. His favorite receiver was Austin Duke, who led the 49ers with 83 yards and two touchdowns.

Johnson has thrown eight touchdowns and no interceptions so far this season.

The Charlotte offense was able to run and pass with equal effectiveness. Alan Barnwell rushed for 80 yards and Damarrell Alexander added 49 another yards on the ground.

Senior Robert Holland was a bright spot for Chowan (0-1). He had 129 yards receiving for the Hawks.

Chowan couldn't establish the run against the 49er defense and finished the game with negative-5 yards rushing in 29 rushing attempts.

Charlotte's victory was their second as a program and they remain undefeated in their inaugural season.
