Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher on Tuesday made a poor choice of words when answering questions related to the recruitment of Notre Dame graduate transfer Everett Golson.

Fisher said, “We’re negotiating, we’re talking right now. We’re going through things, staying in contact with him.”

OK, obviously that doesn’t sound right, but we’re fairly certain Fisher was referring to negotiating what Golson’s role with the team would be. The former Notre Dame starting quarterback is free to attend Florida State and play immediately under the NCAA’s graduate transfer rules and the Seminoles appear to be leading for his services.

Florida State just lost quarterback Jameis Winston to the NFL and currently has Sean Maguire sitting at the top of its depth chart. Even with his pretty horrendous turnover issues, we’re fairly certain Golson could beat Maguire out easily. The only thing holding Golson back from already being a Seminole is probably that Fisher isn’t willing to guarantee him the starting job. He probably wants an open competition for the spot, hoping it elevates the play of both guys.

Golson has already visited Tallahassee and also took a trip to Gainesville to check out Florida. Both schools remain options but most people we have talked to think this is Florida State’s race to win. There are no timelines for a decision yet.

In 2014, Golson started 12 games and completed 60.0 percent of his passes for 3,445 yards, with 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. His play tailed off considerably towards the end of the season as Notre Dame lost five of its final six regular season games. Golson was replaced as the starting quarterback by sophomore Malik Zaire for the team’s bowl game.
