Jacksonville (1-1) jumped ahead 10-0 when Dewhirst returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter.
Charleston Southern (0-2) cut the deficit to 24-10 late in the fourth quarter behind a 17-yard touchdown from backup quarterback Derek Hatcher. However, Dewhirst returned the ensuing onside kick 44 yards for a touchdown to put the game away.
