Imperfect conditions didn't discourage the Hokies this spring

Despite injuries and uncertainty, Virginia Tech kept its focus and pressed on throughout the spring. Neither side of the ball was spared its share of adversity, but the Hokies dealt with it all in stride.
On offense, Tech had to sift through a bevy of running backs. Norm Wood of the Daily News names J.C. Coleman, Trey Edmunds, Travon McMillian, D.J. Reid and Jerome Wright as viable options, while also mentioning Marshawn Williams and "possibly" Shai McKenzie as reinforcements that could arrive in August.
"I think the thing that we've got to be good about is narrowing it down, and … figure out who's going to carry the ball and make sure we get them involved in the game and not trying to play too many guys," Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer told the Daily Press. "We've got several guys that are really good."
Running back isn't the only offensive skill position under the microscope. Tech is also looking for more playmakers in the passing game, Wood noted, to complement receivers Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips, as well as tight end Bucky Hodges.
On defense, the Hokies had to find replacements for several injured starters this spring. Defensive end Ken Ekanem, defensive tackles Corey Marshall and Luther Maddy and cornerbacks Kendall Fuller and Brandon Facyson were all sidelined. The Daily Press, however, expects each player to be back on the field in August.
Even though the Hokies are looking forward to being fully healthy again, the additional opportunities this spring helped Tech's reserves gain valuable experience with the first-team defense.
