His team lost, but San Jose State coach already made week's smartest call
It was the perfect call, despite the end result of the game.
San Jose State was trailing Navy 31-30 on Friday night. The Midshipmen had gained another first down in Spartan territory with less than three minutes left.
San Jose State had one timeout left. Preserve it, right? The clock was stopped as the chains were moved. A handful of seconds ticked down before SJSU coach Ron Caragher called — and appeared to burn — his final timeout.
What was he thinking?
Caragher had a plan that fooled everyone, especially Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds.
On the first play after the timeout, Reynolds rolled around the right end and ran untouched into the end zone.
Upon further review, it is obvious the Spartan defense did its best to avoid any contact with Reynolds.
The score and subsequent PAT put Navy up 38-30. More importantly, it got Caragher and SJSU the ball ... and a chance to tie the game with a touchdown and two-point conversion.
"I should have taken a knee," Reynolds said after the game. "I felt bad about it."
The Spartans methodically drove down the field, scoring on a 2-yard pass from David Fales to Kyle Nunn. The two-point coversion was good and the teams headed to overtime.
San Jose State had no answers for Reynolds in OT, however, and fell 58-52 when the Navy QB scored his NCAA record seventh touchdown of the game.
