The Auburn defense played perhaps its best game of the season against Alabama in the Iron Bowl thanks in large part to the efforts of defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

The defense improved as the season went along but Muschamp's notorious sideline demeanor has not, as the assistant coach was flagged for a 15-yard penalty for yelling at the refs. At one point, Muschamp's actions were so bad, several coaches had to pull the coordinator back to the sideline and head coach Gus Malzahn had to intervene to calm Muschamp.

The penalty in question kept an Alabama drive alive, which would eventually lead to a field goal. In a game in which points were at a premium, the three points really cost Auburn.

Former Alabama head coach Gene Stallings hammered Muschamp on the radio for his antics on the sideline in the big game.

"There's a big difference being up six points and being up nine points," Stallings told The Opening Kickoff on WNSP-FM 105.5 Tuesday. "... I hope the coach who was responsible for that (knows) he really hurt his team getting that 15-yard penalty.

"Getting a 15-yard penalty against Alabama for Auburn really hurt."
