South Carolina freshman defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been medically cleared to play against No. 18 Clemson, although he'll miss the opening quarter for violating team rules.

Athletic spokesman Steve Fink said Saturday that the 6-foot-6, 254-pound Clowney was cleared by team doctors to play after he suffered a mild concussion in last week's 41-20 victory over the Citadel. Clowney did not practice much this week for the 14th-ranked Gamecocks.

The reason Clowney was disciplined was not announced. Clowney is second on the Gamecocks with five sacks.
