Could Trevor Knight be the next Trevone Boykin?

New Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley is a former Texas Tech assistant.

His system, which he ran at Texas Tech and then took to East Carolina, is a pass-happy offense, perfect for a throwing quarterback.

Perfect for Baker Mayfield, it seems. Mayfield, a former Texas Tech quarterback, is now at Oklahoma.

Conventional wisdom says Mayfield will be the starter when the Sooners open the season against Akron next month. Combined with the arrival of Riley, the fact the Sooners weren't good with the passing game last season and Mayfield being eligible, seem to point toward Mayfield getting an edge.

But what about Trevor Knight? Remember, it was Knight who beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl two seasons ago and Knight and his supporters can point down the road to Ft. Worth to make a case for him to start.

Trevone Boykin, who struggled to throw the ball two seasons ago, led TCU to a 12-1 record last year and is now a Heisman favorite. Couldn't Knight do the same thing?

Boykin went 5-10 as a starter heading into last season. The Frogs switched to the Air Raid offense, the same one Oklahoma will use this season, and the turnaround was on.

Unlike Boykin, Knight has a decent record as a starter. He's 11-4, but he's also had interception problems. However, Knight has a lot to draw on, including the Sugar Bowl win. But the Sooners lost to Clemson 40-6 in the Russell Athletic Bowl. That counts against Knight.

“I think it’s a great example of what can happen,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops told The Oklahoman of Boykin. “Their whole team benefited from their system. So definitely. He (Boykin) exploded last year. A guy that’s hard to deal with, and a great example of maybe he wasn’t thought of as such a great thrower, put him in this system, go the right places with the football ...”
