College Football Playoff Rankings: Auburn Comes in Ninth

The first release of the College Football Playoff Rankings in 2016 has the 6-2 Auburn Tigers ranked ninth in the country and as the second best two-loss team.
The College Football Playoff Rankings list Auburn football as the second best two-loss team in the country behind Wisconsin, and the ninth best team in the country.
The top four are Alabama, Clemson, Michigan and Texas A&M.
Interestingly, Auburn’s only two losses came against two of the teams in the top four, but yet we’re still ranked behind Wisconsin whose two losses are to the number three and six teams.
That is actually very important because if Auburn wins out they need to make sure they’re the best two-loss team in the country, which means they need Clemson and Texas A&M to keep winning.
If Auburn does win out and wins the SEC Championship they will most likely jump Wisconsin and possibly some one-loss teams.
Rounding out 5-10 is Washington, Ohio State, Louisville, Wisconsin, Auburn, Nebraska, and Florida.
Auburn only has one win against a team in the top 25 with LSU at 13, and I don’t see anyone else that they have beaten joining the top 25 any time soon.

It’s odd to see a one-loss Texas A&M team ahead of an undefeated Pac 12 team in Washington, but that tells you how highly the committee thinks of the SEC and Alabama.
A win over Alabama would most definitely boost the status of Auburn in the committee’s eyes.
Washington is coming off their best win of the season over number 16 Utah, and they may not get a better one the rest of the way. Still, if Washington goes undefeated and wins the Pac-12 I don’t see how they don’t get in the playoffs.
There are still a lot of big games to be played, especially in the Big 10 and SEC. Ohio State still has to play Nebraska and Michigan; Michigan has to play Ohio State; LSU has to play Florida, Alabama and Texas A&M; Alabama has to play LSU and Auburn; Florida has to play Arkansas and LSU.
Things will work themselves out, but the release of the College Football Playoff Rankings creates a little more excitement for these games.
