CFB AM: Texas turns to walk-on fraternity brother to help QB mess

Somebody, somewhere will joke about this someday. It’ll go one of two ways.

“Man, can you believe how far we’ve come since Year 1 when we had to add an intramural QB out of a fraternity to the roster?” Charlie Strong laughs over an offseason meal.

“Man, remember when we were so down that we needed to pluck quarterbacks out of fraternities?” the Texas alum asks his buddy, painfully, during a return trip to Austin.

All we know today is that has actually happened at Texas. With quarterback David Ash out indefinitely with a concussion and true freshman Jerrod Heard backing up unproven Tyrone Swoopes, the Longhorns desperately need depth at QB.

So they’ve reportedly added walk-on Jimmy Greenwood, a sophomore at Texas who has been playing intramural football and is a member of the fraternity SAE.

There’s some confusion about whether the Texas coaching staff reached out to Greenwood directly or if just decided to walk-on by himself, but it would seem there’s a good chance somebody sent the guy the message that there’s an opportunity for him to play football again if he wanted to.

While the thought of TEXAS approaching a FRATERNITY BROTHER to help its football team is hilarious, Greenwood isn’t just any guy off campus. He played QB in high school for the Kinkaid Falcons, located in the Houston area. Here are his highlights:

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

1. We had a notable football game Thursday evening, with No. 25 BYU beating Houston 33-25 to move to 3-0 on the season. BYU QB Taysom Hill was good enough but not great in the passing game – 21-of-34, 200 yards, one TD – but added 160 rushing yards and a TD. RB Jamal Williams also had a huge night, rushing for 139 yards and two TDs.

As for Houston? Well, QB John O’Korn threw three TDs and zero picks, which was good to see after throwing four picks in a loss to UTSA in Week 1. Otherwise, Houston’s night can be summed up in three Vines.

If nothing else, Houston could appreciate the scenery of Provo, Utah. Check out this gorgeous pregame photo:

I also found this image honoring 9/11 to be superb:

2. Here’s what college football has become in the social media age: After TWO games, the parents of Texas A&M quarterback Kenny Hill have reportedly filed a trademark for “Kenny Trill,” the nickname that gained traction on Twitter after Hill’s Week 1 performance at South Carolina. Think about that.

3. We have football tonight if you’re home: No. 8 Baylor plays at Buffalo at 8 p.m. ET. It’s Baylor QB Bryce Petty’s first game back after suffering two cracked  transverse processes in his back in Baylor’s first game of the season. Ideally, the Bears open up such a big lead that Petty can play one half and then hand it over to back-up Seth Russell. It’ll be interesting to watch his mobility and how he responds to getting hit in the back or side.

THREE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

1. After starting the season 2-0, Rutgers coach Kyle Flood was rewarded with a contract extension that will bump his salary to $1.25 million next season and run through 2019. Currently, Flood is the only coach in the Big Ten making less than $1 million per year. The news comes a couple days before the Scarlet Knights’ first game in the Big Ten, in which they’ll host Penn State.

2. UCLA signed JUCO defensive tackle Takkarist McKinley, and because of a corrected miscalculation of some high school courses, McKinely will enroll in school next week and is eligible to play immediately. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

3. As if Texas A&M and Kevin Sumlin need anything more to brag about, recruit Daniel LaCamera drilled a 68-yard field goal in practice. It hardly looks like he tried.

THREE THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO KNOW

1. Stars Wars is partnering with a bunch of schools to create new apparel, which is cool if you happen to like both the franchise and college football. Here’s a look:

2. In 1996, James Franklin was a second-year assistant coach at East Stroudsburg and wrote then-Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz a letter looking for some advice. Holtz wrote a brief message back, which Franklin’s wife found recently when she was unpacking boxes while moving into their new house near Penn State. Franklin Tweeted this photo of the letter.

3. Colorado is opening two beer gardens at Folson Field this Saturday. I’ve never heard anything negative about Boulder. It’s officially time to make a trip.

LASTLY

* With Auburn on a bye this week, Gus Malzahn will spend Saturday talking ball on your TV.

* Susan Shepard has a longform piece on Texas Tech that’s worth a read if you have time.

* Andre Ware and a (seemingly) live cougar in a Heisman House commercial.

Have a great weekend, all. Enjoy Week 3.
