CFB AM: Sneak peek of film that only Texas, A&M fans can understand

The new film “Lone Star Holy War” seems like a superb and also awful idea.

First, for the superb part. The film, which will be released this fall, examines the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry in depth and the economic and political issues that have undermined what has always been one of college football’s signature rivalry games.

That’s fantastic. Who wouldn’t want to watch a great film about the Longhorns and Aggies?

Well, um, how about some Longhorns and Aggies?

In a sneak peek of the film, we have Texas fans blaming Texas A&M for killing the rivalry by choosing to go jump to the SEC, and we have the Texas A&M party saying the development of the Longhorn Network left the Aggies with no choice. We have a lot of frustrated people pointing fingers, and nobody seems to be happy.

It’s fuel for a volatile argument that will never end, one bloated by decades of both arrogance and insecurity.

That aside, it seems like an awesome film! The rest of us will enjoy it while the Lonestar State burns. Here’s the trailer:

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

1. The NCAA Board of Directors approved a new governance structure on Thursday that gives the Power 5 leagues autonomy to create some of their own rules. Stewart Mandel analyzes the decision and surveys the future landscape of Division I where there’s a lot of restlessness among the non-Power 5 leagues. The New York Times put together a simple and understandable graphic of different parts of autonomy and what they mean. Kevin Trahan has four things to know about the new NCAA.

2. Florida avoided a massive scare on Thursday when All-SEC cornerback Vernon Hargreaves appeared to injure his knee in a practice fight and was carted off the field. Fortunately, tests later revealed he suffered only a bone bruise and is listed as day-to-day. The Gators were overwhelmed by injuries last season; it’d be especially cruel to see them lose a top player, and one of the best DBs in America, before the first game of 2014. Luckily that’s not the case.

3. Beat writer check-in: A Clemson DT feels blessed to return a year after a car wreck, writes Aaron Brenner. Davion Hall and KD Cannon – remember those names at Baylor this season. Kentucky coach Mark Stoops called out his players after a poor practice the other day, writes Kyle Tucker.

THREE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

1. Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott is not pleased with DirecTV and made some public comments to articulate his displeasure. Scott is frustrated that DirecTV has been unwilling (his words) to negotiate a deal with the Pac-12 Network but just struck one with the upstart SEC Network. The two-year-old Pac-12 Network is available in over 60 million homes, which is about 30 million fewer than the SEC Network will claim when it launches next week.

2. Bruce Feldman spoke with Kai Locksley, the four-star QB recruit who recently committed to Florida State. Locksley dad, Mike, is the offensive coordinator at Maryland and a talented recruiter. So how did he not get his own son? Kai had two older brothers who played in college for their dad, and he saw all the difficulties, internally and externally, that presented. The lesson, I suppose: Family and business are generally better off separate.

3. On Thursday, we mentioned that Nebraska fan Jack Hoffman’s cancer had returned, and the 8-year-old was heading for another round of chemo. It’s difficult news, but this will make you smile: After getting the news from doctors, Jack did what anyone would do – go find the biggest hot fudge brownie sundae you possibly can and devour it.
