Ball State starting quarterback Keith Wenning had arthroscopic surgery on an undisclosed left knee injury Saturday.

Coach Pete Lembo described the surgery as a minor procedure and said he expects Wenning to return in time to start the Aug. 29 season opener against Illinois State. Lembo said the knee had been ''annoying'' Wenning and the team thought it best to get it fixed now.

But losing the senior is still a blow.

After throwing for 7,254 yards and 57 touchdowns in his first three seasons at Ball State, Wenning enters 2013 ranked second on the school's career charts in yards passing and TDs. He already holds the school record for completions (716) and attempts (1,144). He also was a second-team all-Mid-American Conference selection in 2012.
