Baker Mayfield, Dede Westbrook Invited to Heisman Ceremony in New York


Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receiver Dede Westbrook have been invited to the Heisman Trophy presentation ceremony in New York City this weekend.
Mayfield finished fourth in the Heisman voting a year ago. The redshirt junior is having his best collegiate season in 2016. Mayfield leads the country with a record-setting pass efficiency rating of 197.8, completion percentage (71.2 percent) and yards per passing attempt (11.1).
Mayfield has thrown for 3,669 yards, including 38 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He won the Burlsworth Throphy for a second straight season (awarded to college football’s best player who was began his career as a walk-on. He also is a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, recognizing the most outstanding college quarterback, and the Maxwell Award, honoring the most outstanding college player.
Westbrook is having a breakthrough season with 74 catches for 1,465 yards and 16 touchdowns. He is averaging 19.8 yards per catch and ranks fourth in the nation with 122.1 receiving yards per game. Twelve of his 16 touchdown catches have been for 40 or more yards. That is the most of that length in 18 collegiate seasons.
The other Heisman finalists who will be joining Mayfield and Westbrook in New York City for the presentation to the 82nd Heisman Trophy winner are Deshaun Watson of Clemson, Lamar Jackson of Louisville and Jabrill Peppers of Michigan.
Five former Oklahoma Sooners are previous winners of the Heisman Trophy: Billy Vessels (1951), Steve Owens (1969), Billy Sims (1978), Jason White (2003) and Sam Bradford (2008). In 2004, Jason White and Adrian Peterson were both Heisman finalists.
The Heisman Trophy ceremony will be broadcast by ESPN on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. CT.
