ASU Football: ASU vs. Texas Tech Rapid Reaction

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Sun Devils improved to 2-0 on the season as they defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders 68-55. Here are a few quick thoughts.

 1. ASU’s running game has the potential to be one of the PAC-12’s best

Kalen Ballage ended the night with 8 touchdowns, tying the NCAA record for most touchdowns by an individual player in a game. While that is the big story, Demario Richard also had a great night. With both of these backs healthy ASU has a very dangerous backfield. A backfield that isn’t scared to run up the middle of the field and has great speed to burst into the open field. These two are going to be fun to watch.

2. Manny Wilkins came into his own tonight

Not only was the running game on fire for the Sun Devils tonight, Wilkins also had himself a great night. He seemed more comfortable throwing the ball downfield than in the first game and he also seemed to only use his legs when he needed to rather than on every impulse. Wilkins also did a great job of running the hurry up offense. There was never a time out due to players not knowing what was going on. He ended the night with a quarterback rating of 173.1 and had 351 passing yards, not too shabby.

    3. The Sun Devils were a perfect 6-for-6 in the red zone

While this game lacked defense, the offense was still clicking on all cylinders within the red zone. The offense was able to score on every opportunity in the red zone, something that they didn’t do last season. If ASU can play like they did tonight, then they could be a very dangerous team in the PAC-12.
