Puerto Rico's Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. stopped Mexico's Ivan Hernandez in the 11th round Saturday night to retain his WBO super-bantamweight title.
In the second defense of his 122-pound (55.3-kilogram) title, Vazquez gradually wore down Hernandez during the second half of their bout at the Silver Spurs Arena.
Vazquez hurt a bruised Hernandez midway through the 10th with a solid right that snapped the challenger's head and took away any possible comeback. Vazquez followed Hernandez to the ropes and scored repeatedly with combinations to the head and body.
Vazquez kept it up early in the 11th and Hernandez's cornermen stepped to the ring apron, forcing referee Telis Asimenios to stop the fight.
Vazquez, whose father and trainer was a three-division world champion in the 1980s and 1990s, improved to 20-0-1 with 17 knockouts.
Hernandez (28-5-1) was the busier fighter in the first round, scoring with lead rights to the head as Vazquez seemed to pace himself for a long bout. Vazquez's best punch of the round was a left uppercut in the closing seconds.
Vazquez enjoyed his first dominant round in the fifth, when he kept Hernandez on the defensive with combinations to the head from close range.
Vazquez and Hernandez both weighed 121 pounds (54.9 kilograms) for the bout.
