Twenty-two-year-old junior welterweight prospect Jessie Vargas (16-0, 9 KOs) kept his undefeated record by stopping veteran journeyman Walter Estrada (39-15-1, 25 KOs) in the main event of Telefutura’s Solo Boxeo Friday night.
After a solid first round, Vargas kept pressing in the second, closing the gap on the 35-year-old Colombian, who had upset Nate Campbell and fringe prospect, Tyrese Hendrix, in two of his last three contests.
Near the end of the second round, Estrada made the fatal error of over-investing on an off-the-mark left hook that threw him off and had him struggling to maintain balance. While managing to stop himself from a self-initiated fall, Estrada abandoned all defense and fell victim to a perfectly timed left hook from Vargas that landed hard and flush. Estrada was out cold before hitting the canvas and the fight was immediately waved off as medical staff scrambled into the ring to attend to Estrada.
This was Vargas’ first fight under new trainer and former chief second to Oscar De la Hoya, Robert Alcazar. Vargas was previously trained by Roger Mayweather.
