In the post-Floyd Mayweather era, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have emerged as the biggest stars in boxing. They appear to be on a collision course sometime in 2017, but they will take fights in the mean time to build up their reputation. And while Golovkin has absolutely pulverized all of his opponents to date, he will face an extremely motivated opponent in Kell Brook.
For as good as Golovkin has looked, his list of opponents is nothing to write home about. That isn’t his fault, though, because he’s such a fearsome fighter that nobody in the middleweight division wants to risk their life to face him. That’s why his next opponent is someone who’s jumping up two weight classes to do the honor. One would think that puts Brook at a disadvantage, but he weighed in heavier than Golovkin.
We saw this fight a couple of months earlier when Amir Khan jumped up in weight to fight Canelo. Combine that result with GGG’s devastating knockout power, and it seems like this can only go one way. But there are still plenty of reasons to tune in. For one, the atmosphere at the O2 Arena is going to be phenomenal. Brook will also come in with something to prove, and he should be commended for being so courageous. And finally, any time GGG fights, it’s a spectacle.
