Former WBO light heavyweight champion Julio Gonzalez was killed in a motorbike accident in Mexico, Fight News reported Sunday.

It is believed the 35-year-old died following a hit-and-run involving a drunk driver on Saturday.

Gonzalez shocked the boxing world in October 2003 when he dethroned Dariusz Michalczewski to win the WBO light heavyweight crown.

The Mexican is also famed for his 2001 slugfest with Julian Letterlough, which was considered one of the greatest fights of the decade.
