Floyd Mayweather: Adrien Broner calling me out was the 'biggest joke' of April Fools' Day

Adrien Broner challenged retired pound-for-pound great Floyd Mayweather after scoring a Ashley Theophane by ninth-round TKO on Friday night.

But Mayweather, who sat in the audience and laughed during Broner's post-fight in-ring interview, said afterwards that the 26-year-old's April Fools' Day call-out was the biggest joke of the night.

"Today is April Fools', ya know?" Mayweather responded when asked about the call-out by FightHype.com. "And that was the biggest joke of the night, actually. I wanted him to continue to go out there and fight -- win. And what's important for Adrien is not just winning; life after boxing, that's what's very, very important."

Broner scored another win on Friday — his 32nd professional victory — but he was stripped of his WBA super lightweight title after weighing in 0.4 pounds over the 140-pound limit Thursday. But Broner decided to trudge forward and lobby for a fight against Mayweather nonetheless.

''Somebody that I look up to, someone that I admire took the chance to do an interview and talk bad about me,'' Broner said. ''I'm a man — Floyd has got to see me.''

The 39-year-old Mayweather, who retired with a perfect 49-0 record last May, doesn't see point of Broner's actions, and believes he should be looking up to "Money" as a role model rather than a future adversary.

"I remember when I was young, and I never had a Floyd Mayweather to steer me the right way. Don't be like me, Adrien, be better than me," Floyd said. "I just want the best for these kids."

Though if Broner is insistent on facing Mayweather back into the ring, he'll probably need a couple more signature wins.

"It's so many huge fights out there." Mayweather said. "You got guys like Terrance Crawford ... Sean Porter ... And of course, we'll see what the future holds for Adrien Broner. I wish him nothing but the best."
