Former kickboxing champion Gurkan Ozkan has been sentenced to 3-1/2 years in jail after pleading guilty to attempting to evade police in three car chases during which he reached speeds of up to 180kpm (110 mph).

The 42-year-old Ozkan, who was born in Turkey but lives in Australia, will serve at least two years before being eligible for parole, Judge Duncan Allen ruled in the Victoria Country Court on Monday.

Judge Allen said it was only ''sheer luck and a series of miracles'' that somebody wasn't killed or badly injured during the high speed police pursuits through Melbourne's eastern suburbs. During one of the chases, Ozkan rammed a car and collided with several other vehicles.
