NEW YORK (AP) Errol Spence Jr. stopped Chris Algieri with 48 seconds remaining in the fifth round of a welterweight fight Saturday night at Barclays Center in the main event of the Premier Boxing Champions.
Spence (20-0) started off aggressively and never let up against the Long Island fighter. The 26-year-old dropped Algieri early in the fourth and again early in the fifth with a left hook.
The end came when Spence delivered a punishing left hook to Algieri's face and referee Benjy Esteves stopped the fight when Algieri quickly fell to the canvas.
Algieri (21-3) lost for the third time in his last four fights since getting the WBO junior welterweight championship from Ruslan Provodinkov on June 14, 2014, in Brooklyn.
