Berto successfully defends WBC title

Undefeated Andre Berto successfully defended his WBC welterweight title, stopping Mexico's Freddy Hernandez at 2:07 of the first round Saturday.

Berto improved to 27-0 with his 21st knockout. He hammered Hernandez (29-2) with a left hook, then floored him with a straight right during the co-feature fight of the Juan Manuel Marquez-Michael Katsidis lightweight championship bout at MGM Grand Garden Arena,

Hernandez got up before the referee counted 10, but the fight was stopped.

Also, on the undercard, junior lightweight Jason Litzau (28-2) won a split decision over Panama's Celestino Caballero (34-3). Litzau had winning scores of 96-94, 97-93 and the other judge scored it 96-94 for Caballero.

Junior welterweight Walter Estrada (38-13-1) also won by split decision, topping Nate Campbell (33-7-1).

Estrada had winning scores of 77-74, 77-74 and the other judge had it 76-75 for Campbell.

Erislandy Lara of Cuba won the vacant WBA Fedelatin junior middleweight title, stopping Tim Connors at 1:38 of the first round. Lara improved to 14-0 with his ninth knockout, and Connors dropped to 10-2.

Super middleweight Bastie Samir of Ghana stopped Billy Cunningham at 1:56 of the second round. Samir is 7-0, all on knockouts. Cunningham is 4-8.

Junior middleweight Keith Thurman stopped Favio Media at 2:34 of the fourth round, improving to 15-0 with his 14th knockout. Medina dropped to 23-3-3.

Also, welterweight Michael Finney stopped Clayvionne Howard at 1:26 of the second round, the winner's sixth knockout in six career fights. Howard is 2-5-1.
