In 299 career starts in NASCAR's top series, Allmendinger has never won on an oval. But he almost pulled it off in the sixth race of the 2016 campaign, finishing second on the short track at Martinsville.

Allmendinger always is one of the favorites to win on a road course, and Sonoma was no exception in June. But after starting second and leading 20 laps, he was upset to fade to 14th by the finish.
Allmendinger didn't win in his other road-course effort at Watkins Glen International in August, but he did rally to finish fourth after starting ninth. Allmendinger's only career win in the series came at WGI in 2014.
Allmendinger deserves kudos for the way he finished the season, with an eighth at Kansas, a 10th at Talladega and another eighth in the season finale at Homestead while racking up an average finish of 10.0 over his last six races.
Shortly after the season ended, it was announced that JTG Daugherty will expand from a single-car team to a two-car operation in 2017. The addition of Chris Buescher (pictured) gives Allmendinger someone to share information and data with, and should help him going forward.
