Real Madrid fall short against Villarreal, just miss setting new consecutive wins record

No history was made on this day.

With a victory against Villarreal on Wednesday, Zidane's Madrid would've won 17 matches in a row, stretching back to last season. In the process, Zidane and his charges broke Miguel Muñoz's 55-year-old Real Madrid record of 15 against Osasuna, and then set the club record against Espanyol with their 2-0 victory over the Barcelona-based side.

Madrid hosted Villarreal, and welcomed back both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to the side, with James Rodriguez in as well. Not a bad way to assure yourself of three points at home, right?

Unfortunately the little Yellow Submarine had other ideas, and Madrid got punched in the nose right before halftime when Bruno Soriano chipped home a disrespectful little panenka penalty to put the visitors ahead.

Sergio Ramos pulled the Merengues back level just after half, but Villarreal stood tall against the battering waves and pulled out a 1-1 draw, ruining Zidane's shot at one-upping Pep Guardiola's all-time record.

Madrid travel to take on Las Palmas next, to try and restart the streak one more time.
