The Cowboys are considering putting Tony Romo on injured reserve

Like 31 other teams, the Dallas Cowboys have decisions to make regarding their roster this weekend. The deadline for teams to get under the 53-man limit is on Saturday, which means they’ll have to cut about 22 players from their current 75-man roster.

One of the most important calls Dallas has to make has to do with the quarterbacks. Dak Prescott will undoubtedly be on the active roster, but Tony Romo may not.

According to Stephen Jones, the Cowboys are considering putting Romo on short-term injured reserve, which would sideline him for at least the first eight weeks (seven games) of the season.

In order to make the decision a bit easier, the Cowboys are having Romo undergo a second MRI on his back this weekend. As it stands, Romo could be out closer to eight to 10 weeks rather than the hopeful six-week timetable, according to the Star-Telegram.

If that were to be the case, the Cowboys would be smart to put him on short-term IR. It would open up a roster spot at another position, or allow them to keep two quarterbacks behind Prescott on the roster – Jameill Showers and likely a veteran pick-up.
