Texans head coach Bill O'Brien says J.J. Watt is officially out for the season

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien confirmed on Friday what many assumed about star defensive lineman J.J. Watt: He's officially done for the season.

The Texans placed the three-time Defensive Player of the Year (2012, 2014, 2015) on injured reserve on Wednesday after he reinjured his back against the Patriots last week.

Watt underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a herniated disk in his back — the same disc that required surgery this past offseason, according to the Houston Chronicle's John McClain.

Prior to O'Brien's announcement, there remained a glimmer of hope that the 27-year-old might able to make a comeback later in the season as the team's IR player designated for return. On Wednesday, Watt issued the following statement about his upcoming absence from the field:

The Texans (2-1) host the Tennessee Titans (1-2) on Sunday.
