The Buccaneers had contact with every team about trying to trade the disgruntled QB but couldn't find any takers and opted to release him on Thursday.

"We made the decision today to release Josh Freeman," GM Mark Dominik said in a statement. "We appreciate his efforts over the past five seasons, but we felt this was in the best interests of both Josh and the Buccaneers."

The Bucs benched the fifth-year pro last week after Freeman played poorly in the team's first three games, all losses. Freeman was declared inactive for last Sunday's game against Arizona. He watched from a suite at Raymond James Stadium as rookie Mike Glennon made his pro debut during a 13-10 loss that dropped the Bucs to 0-4.

Freeman became the first 4,000-yard passer in franchise history last season. However, his inconsistency down the stretch led to the Bucs losing five of their last six games and missing the playoffs for the fifth straight year.
