Hyde expected to be ready for offseason program after foot surgery

San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde is expected to be ready for the start team's offseason program after undergoing surgery for a stress fracture in his left foot.

On the day when the 49ers formally introduced new coach Chip Kelly to the media, San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke revealed that Hyde had surgery before the end of the regular season.

Hyde was limited to seven games in his first season as the 49ers' starter. He sustained the injury in a loss at the New York Giants on Oct. 11, played the next two games and never set foot on the field again.

A second-round draft pick out of Ohio State in 2014, Hyde finished with 470 yards and three touchdowns on 115 carries. He opened the season with a monster effort in a 20-3 win over Minnesota, rushing for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

San Francisco's backfield was in complete disarray following Hyde's injury. Backups Reggie Bush and rookie Mike Davis were also hurt, forcing the team to sign a collection of journeymen off the street over the second half of the season.
