Sam, who is currently a free agent, was released by the Rams on Saturday. He is now free to sign with any practice squad.
The first openly gay player drafted was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
Despite being a longshot to make the team because of the Rams' defensive line depth, Sam survived two waves of cuts due to his solid play in preseason.
After learning of his release, Sam -- who was present at Missouri's season opener on Saturday -- took to Twitter:
I want to thank the entire Rams organization and the city of St. Louis for giving me this tremendous opportunity and allowing me to (1/2)— Michael Sam (@MichaelSamNFL) August 30, 2014
show I can play at this level. I look forward to continuing to build on the progress I made here toward a long and successful career (2/2)— Michael Sam (@MichaelSamNFL) August 30, 2014
