The 10 greatest records of Peyton Manning's career

Published Mar. 7, 2016 12:00 p.m. ET

Peyton Manning heads into retirement in possession of more passing records than any quarterback in NFL history. His durability combined with his accuracy and intelligence make him one of the best to ever step on the field.

Given his lack of success in the postseason -- nine one-and-done playoff appearances -- Manning doesn't get much credit for being "clutch." When looking into the numbers, however, that's not the case. He has more fourth-quarter comeback wins (45) than anyone in NFL history, even Tom Brady (37).

One trait that Manning never has had is speed, and he'll openly admit that. Despite not being an elusive quarterback, he was sacked less consistently than all but one quarterback ever. Manning is tied with Dan Marino for the lowest sack rate in league history at 3.1 percent. It's safe to say he made his offensive line look good during his 17 seasons in the NFL.

Brett Favre is the league's ultimate ironman and gunslinger -- and also is the reason Manning will finish second in several passing categories. Not only is Manning second to Favre in consecutive games played (227), he's also the runner-up to Favre in completions (6,125) and pass attempts (9,380). On the bright side, Manning is ninth all time in career interceptions (251), trailing Favre (336), who might never be caught.

Hardware is always what people want to talk about when ranking quarterbacks. Although Manning doesn't have the most Super Bowl rings, he does have enough accolades to fill up his trophy case. No one has won more MVP Awards than Manning (five); Jim Brown, Johnny Unitas and Favre each won three.

As we bid farewell to No. 18, let's acknowledge his 10 most impressive records:

1. Single-season passing yards: 5,477 (2013)

2. Single-season TD passes: 55 (2013)

3. Career passing yards: 71,940

4. Career passing TDs: 539

5. Single-game TD passes (tied): 7 (2013)

6. Game-winning drives: 56

7. 4,000-yard passing seasons: 14

8. 300-yard passing games: 93

9. Games with a perfect passer rating (158.3): 4

10. Career wins: 200 (including playoffs)
