Report: Eagles QB Foles (collarbone) could be out longer than expected

Published Nov. 27, 2014 8:43 a.m. ET

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles might be sidelined longer than the original projection of 8-10 weeks, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Foles suffered a broken left collarbone (non-throwing arm) on Nov. 2 against the Houston Texans. Although he has been increasing his throwing, the bone must be "more than" healed before he will be cleared to return because otherwise another blow to that area could result in a recurrence of the injury, according to the report.

Foles has yet to have a follow-up exam, though the newspaper reports that could happen next week.

"I know he's working extremely hard from a rehab standpoint," Eagles head coach Chip Kelly to The Philadelphia Inquirer, "but the whole decision will be made based upon what the bone is, and they'll get that X-rayed at some point in time."

The best-case scenario would be for Foles to return Dec. 20 against the Washington Redskins in Week 16, so any delay might make it tough for Kelly to switch QBs heading into a potential playoff game. At 8-3, the Eagles are tied with the Dallas Cowboys for the NFC East lead.

Starting in place of Foles, Mark Sanchez has gone 2-1.
