Miami Dolphins: William Hayes Trade is Quietly Brilliant

The Miami Dolphins bolstered their defensive line with an under-the-radar trade for William Hayes for, in his words, 'A stapler and a coffee machine.'

The Miami Dolphins needed to bulk up on the defensive line this offseason. Their base was clearly set with Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake among others, but they certainly needed some help in the middle. They quietly made a big move acquiring run-stopping specialist William Hayes in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams.

Hayes can be a force against the run as a rotational player, and also has the ability to get to the quarterback when called upon. Over the past five years, he's averaged over five sacks per year with consistent production.

The deal is so favorable because ,as Hayes himself so eloquently put it on Instagram, all the Dolphins had to give up was "a stapler and a coffee machine." In reality they gave up much less than a stapler and coffee machine. Miami sent a sixth-rounder to Los Angeles for Hayes and a seventh. Not only will Dolphins fans enjoy his production on the field, he will bring plenty of entertainment off the field as well.

For those of you who don't know, Hayes has some interesting worldly views. Not only does he believe dinosaurs never existed, he believes mermaids may be real and no man has ever landed on the moon. This is just the tip of the iceberg with him and his theories. In fairness after researching his theory of mermaids, it is based in some logic. The dinosaurs and moon landing concepts are a bit too far-fetched for me.

Perhaps most importantly with anything to do with his personality is how happy he is to be in South Beach. Hayes told the Miami Dolphins official website that being traded would have really "bummed him out" had he been shipped anywhere other than Miami.

"Nothing really surprises you in this league," Hayes said. "But I got excited. I felt like it was a team who wanted me last year throughout free agency and for them to still have interest in me again, it wasn't the worst feeling in the world. I think if it would have been somebody else I probably would have been a little bit more bummed, but I'm excited to get the opportunity to play for Coach (Adam Gase) and hopefully help this team any way I can."

Hayes continued on with the same sentiment, that Miami is a place he's happy to be and ready to contribute.

This is exactly what fans want to hear out of free agents heading to the Dolphins and really speaks to culture Adam Gase is creating in Miami. This is another sign pointing to the franchise heading back into the right direction.
