Chiefs' Alex Smith comes so close to quarterbacking history

Published Dec. 13, 2015 3:54 p.m. ET

Alex Smith's historic streak of mistake-free football came to an abrupt end on Sunday.

The Chiefs quarterback attempted 312 passes before his 313th -- a seam route grabbed by San Diego's Jason Verrett -- was intercepted. That's the second-longest streak in NFL history.

Only Tom Brady (358) has tried more throws without an INT. Smith surpassed Browns legend Bernie Kosar (308 attempts) earlier in the game.

The NFL's new leader in pass attempts without a pick is now Buffalo's Tyrod Taylor.
