Colin Kaepernick has 'arm fatigue,' Blaine Gabbert will start Sunday

The San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback situation is one of the NFL’s most muddled, but a couple of Friday announcements from coach Chip Kelly gave it a little more clarity – at least for this weekend.

Colin Kaepernick sat out the physical portion of Friday’s practice with “arm fatigue,” and Kelly named Blaine Gabbert the starter for Sunday’s preseason opener against the Houston Texans. Kaepernick, however, will play Sunday.

The 49ers are one of the NFL’s few teams without a clear starter at quarterback as the season approaches, and Kaepernick and Gabbert have been splitting reps in camp. Kaepernick started 47 games over five years and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl in 2013 before he was benched in favor of Gabbert last season.

Kelly is in his first year with the 49ers and has been giving each QB an opportunity to get his attention. Now it’s clear that Gabbert will get the first real chance to do that come Sunday.
