Report: Bears to sign S Sherrod Martin in wake of Rolle's injury

The Chicago Bears won their first game of the season on Sunday, but it came at a cost. The Bears took two big hits on the injury front, as safety Antrel Rolle wrenched his ankle and center Will Montgomery went down with a fractured leg.

The Bears will have to settle their offensive line situation sometime this week. In the meantime, they plan to bolster the defensive backfield by signing Sherrod Martin, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

Martin was with the Bears during training camp and was cut a week before the season opened. He was originally a second-round pick of the Carolina Panthers back in 2009. He played four seasons and started 36 games there, recording seven interceptions as a Panther.

Martin, 30, missed the entire 2013 season with a knee injury and came back last year to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he had one interception.

The Bears need the veteran safety to step in right away and fill the void in the defensive backfield created by Rolle's injury.
